How's it going?! Sorry you didn't hear from me last week.
I didn't have time to email anyone.
But how's it going? I miss you guys. All week I have been
looking forward to writing you guys today because I could feel that this last
week was really hard for you guys. I don't know what happened but it was just a
feeling. Dad I am glad you are doing good, your knee is feeling better, your
going on dates, and that you are enjoying being in the church production! I
can't wait to see pictures!
My week was good! This has been the longest week on the
mission but also the most enjoyable. The members we live with lent me one of
their bikes this week so Sister Romero and I have started biking in the
mornings for our exercise. That is a lot of fun. We contacted a lot of new
people this week. I am getting better at listening and discerning people's
needs and thinking of a principle of the gospel that can help them which is
really great!! All is well here in Tooele. We got about
8 inches of snow last night and the roads haven't been
plowed yet so I'm going to have to be really careful driving this morning.
I can't believe I've been out for two months! Time is
flying, but I am enjoying everyday of it. This is my life now, and for that I
am extremely grateful. If ever there was a time for me to learn hard lessons
and figure out what I want to do for the rest of my life and the kind of person
I want to be I'm glad it's here on the mission where my source of direction is
solely from he Lord.
This week we had dinner with an investigator in Rush
Valley, she's an older woman, Anglican, and her daughter and 2 grand kids live
with here. They own about 45 goats so we got to drink raw goats milk for
dinner! It was pretty good!
Our area is progressing slowly but surely. The thing about
Utah missions is that they are unique. Everyone who is not a member has had the
missionary lessons at some point before. We mostly work with less active
members, which are the majority of referrals we get from the Ward mission
leaders, or part member families. There are some people here that are
interested in coming back to church but most of the time people already have
strongly formed opinions for or against the church. So it's like a treasure
hunt! We are here to find those few gems that are ready to receive our message!
One of my favorite things I studied this week was Alma 38
and 39. Alma is counseling his son Shiblon. In chapter 38 I crossed out every
time Alma says "son" and wrote "daughter". I love verses
10-12 especially because I feel like he's talking directly to me and telling me
my missionary purpose!! I love chapter 39 where Alma counsels his son Corianton
because even though Corianton committed one of the most abominable sins, Alma
shows him that because of the Atonement of Christ we can be made clean again.
The gospel of
Jesus Christ is a gospel of ACTION! One of the biggest ways we can take action
is by being good examples of Christ in the things that we say, the things that
we do, and how we treat other people. So as you guys go through the your week I
want to challenge you all to imagine the Savior standing beside you. Would you
say the things you say? Would you do the things you do? I know that as we do
this the love we have for those we come in contact with will increase and we
will be able to see them as the Savior sees them.
I love you and miss you all!!!
Love,
Sister Abby Martinez
